More golden tips! Whats "Terminal.app" and where do I find it?
BTW: Is there a way to change the bg and fg colors in xterm (or
Terminal.app)? How about the font and font size?

Thanks for the history lesson. Hard to find
info like that.
So if I understand things now:
1.) I have to give up all the pretty things that AIX CDE could do for
me except a terminal window. I can't use the file manager.
Yes you can, if you know what the actual program is called. Have a
look in the dtsession files on the AIX box, which might give you some
clues. Personally, I manage my files with the command line.
2.) I open an xterm on my iMac and the ssh
-X to my AIX target and that's it.
Yup. Or you can do what I do and dispense with xterm as well, and use
Terminal.app. I prefer it to xterm anyway. As long as your .bashrc
sets your DISPLAY variable correctly, any X clients you start from a
Terminal window will work fine.
Most of the time my X server is completely invisible - it's only when I
run the occasional emacs on another machine that I even notice it's
there!
