Actually, no. I do mean emacs, not xemacs.
(aside: I have no position on the emacs vs. xemacs thing; emacs just
happens to be the one I use)
Apple's emacs works fine in a Terminal.app or xterm environment, if
by "fine" one means that it works in the (old) traditional manner
where *everything* is done via the keyboard. But emacs is available
as an X client, and for the past umpteen years I have been using it
that way, on both Solaris and more recently OS X.
There is at least one app that has been ported to OS X that can be
used either as an Aqua app, or as an X win client: R
(http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/). Admittedly, it's not the same
binary; there is R.app, the Aqua binary that goes in /Applications,
and a binary that is also an X client, that can be used as such by
adding a link,
ln -s /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/R /usr/local/bin/R
(this is an option that has to be done manually after the fact; the
installer does not create the link).
So, I was just wondering if any of the versions of emacs ported to OS
X as an Aqua app had a similar "feature". It would be nice to have to
install only one additional emacs, instead of two.
Thanks

By "emacs" I take it that you are actually asking about xemacs. The Apple
installed version of emacs works just fine in a terminal window in either
Apple's Terminal.app or an X11 xterm window.
If you really want an xemacs that runs in X11 and Aqua, then I seriously doubt
that you will find one. The display technologies used in them is too
different to make it feasible to have one binary work in both.
