I was using XDarwin/XFree86 with Afterstep 1.8.0 under OS X 10.2.8.
Afterstep has virtual desktops, and I had configured it to use the
the control key together with arrow keys to move between desktops.
Very handy.
When I upgraded to 10.3.7 I decided to try Apple's implementation of
X Windows, including X11 instead of XDarwin, but continue to use
Afterstep, instead of XQuartz (XQuartz does not have virtual
desktops, and there are some other customizations I'm fond of that it
doesn't support). That is, I'm still using rather old Afterstep
binaries and libraries.
The control with arrow key business doesn't work any more (using the
exact same configuration file).
I can assign the same action, moving to another desktop, to a
function key, and it works. But when I assign it to a control-arrow
sequence it does not. This suggests that the WM still works, and that
the problem has something to do with interpreting keystrokes.
I can think of two major possibilities:
1) 10.3.7 somehow grabs those keystrokes, preventing their keycodes
or whatever from reaching Afterstep.
For example, I have to change Expose's function key assignments to
something else in order to keep my Afterstep function key
assignments, so I know that it is possible for something in Aqua to
grab keystrokes and prevent them from being used by the window manger.
2) something in X11.app or Apple's versions of the rest of the X
windows, is different (in which case going back to XDarwin/XFree86
might solve my problem)
If anyone can offer some information or insight I would certainly
appreciate it.
Thanks

p.s.
The keystroke combination control-right-arrow echos ;5C to
whichever xterm has the input focus.
FWIW, back when XFree86/XDarwin first came out (back in the 10.0
days, as I recall), Afterstep was the only WM I found that had
everything I wanted, i.e., virtual desktops, windows that don't
disappear when being resized or moved in rootless mode,
focus-follows-mouse, and the ability to assign keystrokes to actions
such as raising a window. I've been using it ever since. I recently
checked all the WMs available from fink, and most had windows
disappearing while being resized or moved in rootless mode, which
takes them off my acceptable list. I do admit, though, that if they
can be configured otherwise, I didn't try to find out about it.
There is now a version 2 of Afterstep, but as far as I can tell,
nobody is working it for OS X issues, and I don't have the right kind
of knowledge to do that. It builds on OS X, and runs, but with
miscellaneous little glitches, last time I tried.
