X11 (Tiger) Oddity: Alt+Letter Key Opens Menus

Under Panther, I could type accented text in X11 programs pretty much
the same way I could in Aqua programs. Now, however, in many programs
(Sylpheed and gVim, for example), option (or alt) + letter opens a menu
rather than typing an accented letter. Is there any way to get the
Panther behavior back?
