Your problem in this case is related more to X11 than it is to any
version of Mac OS X. As you've probably heard elsewhere (since you're
using X11) the behaviour of option on the Mac is not analogous to any
usage of alt on any other platform. On the Mac, it is almost
exclusively used for accents and special characters (perhaps this is
similar to the Meta key?). On all other platforms that I am aware of,
it commonly us used along with ctrl (and command on mac) as a hot-key
or modifier key, many times for keyboard shortcuts. X11 on mac, where
many X apps use alt as the menu key, some ctrl, and some meta
(emacs??), has trouble with this: provide expected Mac functionality,
or expected X functionality? Is there a common ground? Who knows...
To fix this, try making sure that the "Enable keyboard shortcuts
under X11" option in X11.app's preferences is checked, also try with
the "Use the system keyboard layout" option checked. If none of this
works, you might have some luck getting the X app to use different
shortcut keys.
Other than that, I can't help.

Under Panther, I could type accented text in X11 programs pretty much
the same way I could in Aqua programs. Now, however, in many programs
(Sylpheed and gVim, for example), option (or alt) + letter opens a
menu
rather than typing an accented letter. Is there any way to get the
Panther behavior back?
Thanks,
