I was aware of this, but under Panther, I couldn't have gotten the
option/alt key to open a menu in X11 if I'd stood on my head. In that
respect, X11's behavior under Panther was much different that it is
under Tiger.

I've tried turning both of those off and on, but it makes no
difference. gVim does have an option to disable the alt key for opening
menus, but that didn't help. Typing alt+s, for instance, produces an o
with an acute accent instead of a German "sharp s". Emacs, OTOH, still
works as it did under Panther (there's no alt-key-for-menus feature
built in to Emacs).
