hi robert,

 What is in
 /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib
(or the lproj for your language environment)?

Mine has two files, classes.nib and objects.nib.

as does mine ...

% ls -al /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib
total 8
dr-xr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 May 29 03:41 .
dr-xr-xr-x 7 root wheel 238 May 29 03:41 ..
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 99 May 30 22:17 classes.nib ->
../../../../../../../../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/darwin/bundle/English.lproj/
MainMenu.nib/classes.nib
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 99 May 30 22:17 objects.nib ->
../../../../../../../../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/darwin/bundle/English.lproj/
MainMenu.nib/objects.nib

I can't figure what the files might be redirecting to. Is it /../xc at the root level? Seems wrong. I wonder also about permissions. Tiger seems to want root:wheel for more things, but that may not extend to Application bundles.

I have
ll /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib
total 28
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 2369 Mar 26 00:00 classes.nib
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 20829 Mar 26 00:00 objects.nib

I recall that the symlinking was the problem I had last year in getting Xdarwin and X11 apps to work. The solution was to use the Xorg lndir method to create a build tree then to replace build/programs/Xserver with xc/programs/Xserver (i.e. cp -Rp ../xc/programs/Xserver ../programs from within xorg/build) then make World.

What happens if you just copy the nib files into the final bundle (and any other files that had their links copied instead of the files)? When I had the problem build/programs/Xserver/hw/darwin/bundle/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib/ had links to non-existent files.

I built X11.app last on May 1, a few days after installing 10.4. There were a few fatal errors related to declared externs that were defined as statics and there was a problem with a header file no longer around (I believe). But I did get 6.8.2 installed.

If you build Xorg the Xorg-recommended way in its own lndir (symlinked)

i have ...

tree, then neither X11.app nor Xdarwin.app will contain the nib files.
There are some other errors that may show up with X11.app without some
 hand
patching. But the lack of nibs does not create an error recorded in
 World.log.

yup, all clear.

 If you haven't seen
 http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1032282&group_id=180
 34&atid=318034 try there.

i have a while ago, and i've applied *both* the latest x11app.diff & apple.tgz patches.

without them, XDarwin doesn't build at all on Tiger! (which was the case on Panther as well, iirc).

WITH them, the problem (nib error on lauch) still exists

so, methinks its still something else ....

cheers,

richard
