Well, you can start a local X session without a window manager.
Create a file in your home directory called .xinitrc consisting of a
single line containing the word "xterm". Then when you start X11,
you'll get an xterm window and nothing else. The window won't be
decorated, because there's no window manager - you won't be able to
move it or anything. But you can then ssh to the Linux box and start
up a gnome-session and it should work - and the remote window manager
will decorate your xterm window so you can get it out of the way.
