When I login into the remote Mac with Remote Desktop, the command

Should ssh -Y not take care of passing the DISPLAY information to
the client as it does it correctly on the remote LINUX system?
It does, but iirc the default setup of sshd (i.e., the server part)
on Mac OS X client is not to allow X11 forwarding.
So on the remote Mac, edit /etc/sshd_config and uncomment/change the
line containing "X11Forwarding" so it says "X11Forwarding yes".
