I've seen this error before and it usually happens when installing the Panther version of X11 (which is what is posted on all of the obvious places on the Apple site). Specifically note:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html
There is a note about 10.4. You can either get the package from an installer disk for Tiger or if you don't have one handy I can post a copy someplace for you to retrieve.

I've done the open komono with xhost + Checked that the remote machine can ssh into the mac; but gets the "Can't open Display" error with DISPLAY set and exported both with static-ip:0.0 or network name.apple.com:0.0 The problem machine can Display out ( xclock )to to other machine . Just not the reverse. The only Client services turned on are remote login, ftp and file sharing. Any idea what may be blocking? X11 worked before ( Sept-ish) when throwing mozilla from a remote, but not now. System updated since then from 10.4.2 to 10.4.3 + security and Java. Also reran the X11user.pkg yesterday, but problem persists. JD
