The command to start KDE isn't "kde". It's "startkde". But you have
to have X11 running first and have $DISPLAY set properly.
The easiest thing is probably to put "startkde" in your .xinitrc file
and then just start X11 normally.
Example: in a Terminal window at the $ prompt (don't type the $!):
$ echo startkde >~/.xinitrc
After that, starting X11 will start KDE, too. You can do that from
the same terminal window by running "startx", or you can launch
X11.app from the Finder.
