Well, I'm a bit concerned by the apparent intent to spend the next 8
months working on the next product and not fixing bugs with current
software. I see this throughout the OS. OS X still has the feel of
a "work in progress, we're getting there" kind of thing, instead of a
mature, beautiful OS. I believe that Apple's focus has drifted away
from a superlative user experience and is focusing on the "next great
thing." Apple does not spend as much time making the user experience
really nice as they used to, although they are still the industry
leader, of course. I think Apple should forego the purchase of some
new company and hire some user interface experts to work on the
Finder and Mail apps in particular. I don't need a little Spotlight
field in the Finder windows, I need to have .Mac file transfer work
faster and smoother, and to be able to make an alias by option-
dragging (like in Windows), and to have contextual menus in the
Finder that do actual useful things (like in Windows). Spotlight
should allow arbitrary actions based on arbitrary filters, and then
3rd parties will come up with great ways to use them. I crave a
polished user interface, based on surveys of actual users instead of
a small team of software developers who think they know what I should
want and have time to implement about 2/3 of that before they go work
on the next great idea.

In any case, thanks for responding. I didn't realize that the
problem was anything more than the timelessly entertaining low-
level X11 routines.

Hi all,
As mentioned in the README, this special X11-only update was
driven by two urgent issues associated with GLX:

though, we did our best to squeeze in additional fixes where
feasible. The problem with 8-bit color, unfortunately, is due to
lower-level system components that are not part of X11 per se, and
thus not appropriate for this Update. We'll see if we can get that
fix into a regular Software Update, but with Leopard right around
the corner I can't promise anything.
