How exactly are you initiating the ssh command? Are you typing it or
using a script, and if a script are you running it from inside a
window or using it to launch a new window or what?
The behavior you describe is what I would expect if you did "ssh -n"
or otherwise convinced the remote box that there were no tty on your
end.
Why are you running bash manually to get an interactive shell? Is it
not your login shell? Is the -l option to bash equivalent to --login?

Lately, when I log into my Macs from abroad, they have their

After logging in, I get no control chars, etc., and "echo $TERM"
prints "dumb".
I know the "bash" part is extra, but it comes out of a customization
script I wrote and did no harm previously. If I remove the "bash",
then I get the proper terminal settings and all is fine. I can then
type "bash" at the prompt and get a subshell that also works properly.
My question is, why? What is happening beneath the hood to screw up
my terminal, and why did this just start happening a couple of weeks
ago? One hint might be that I am running a newer bash on my local
machine... is that a factor?
