What the heck, I might as well chip in.
Because with X11 I can have virtual desktops, each having its own
windows containing unix shells associated with different projects.
Maybe Leopard will help with that, but even then, focus follows mouse
is highly unlikely to be implemented by Apple.

There are lots of good reasons to use xterm (I use gnome-terminal
myself extensively). If one is using other X11 programs one might as
well use xterm so that pointer follow mouse works between them all (and
to minimize Mac application switching). And it is nice to be able to
use X11 cut and paste between them all.
