There was a certainly a small amount of panic when my brand new Intel
machine didn't apparently support X11.

You do not need to use Pacifist, and you do not need to reinstall
(even if that were "frightening", as, even if you did have to do
that, an Archive and Install leaves (nearly) everything perfectly
intact - but you don't have to do that anyway).
Further, the X11 package is itself at /System/Installation/
Packages/X11User.pkg, as I said previously, and can be run
standalone.
