[ I just noticed that "most anyone" would not include the poor troglodytes who must work in 8-bit mode. "xterm -bg red -fg blue" (or any other color) gives a white-on-white window, except that the mouse cursor is blue-on-red. ]

I've been following the deep technical discussions with interest, but in my facility we do have a rather basic use for X11. It is used to connect from Macs to Silicon Graphics O2 computers under Irix to run a program remotely called XwinNMR (from Bruker) which only runs in 256 colors.

We normally use a command like 'ssh -Y user@host' to get remote access, which worked fine under Tiger. (At least on Power PCs, we needed the 10.4.9 update (I think) to fix a font problem with Intel Macs).

So far I have not deployed Leopard at all due to my experiences testing in our computer store where 256 colors just produced white on white windows.

I assume that this is the general experience? And does anyone have any workarounds for this issue?

Thanks,

Phil.
