I downloaded and installed the 1.2a7 binary to see if it would fix my
XDMCP problems. It changed the problem to one that's less annoying,
but still completely unusable. I filed the following under bug
#5585456, but thought I would also post it to the list in case anyone
else has this problem or knows a workaround:
------------------
Summary:
Connecting to a linux server running Gnome 2.18 and xorg-x11 7.2 via
XDMCP using the command "/usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz -query 10.1.2.58
-once" from Terminal.app using the Xquartz 1.2a7 binary provided by
Ben Byer on http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin results in a correct-looking
window showing up in near-fullscreen (goes behind the doc) that will
not accept focus for typing in a user name or password to log in. I
tried repeatedly switching to other applications and back by clicking
on dock icons or pushing cmd-tab, all with no effect. Note that I
COULD click on buttons on the login page, though the cursor never
changed to the gnome cursor icon even when clicking on buttons in the
XDMCP window.
Note that this behavior is better than the stock-X11 version released
on the Leopard DVD, whose behavior I described like this on the
x11-apple mailing list:
(X11-leopard-dvd-version)
"When I try to connect to my linux server via XDMCP with the following
command, the "window" that starts drawing on the screen keeps flashing
in and out of focus approximately once per second and every time it
flashes into focus it starts drawing the window in blocks
(512-pixels-ish) anew.
"It would be comical if it weren't so downright unusable. I tried
disabling spaces altogether, with no effect.
"/usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz -query (my server ip) -once"
Steps to reproduce:
1. Set up a linux server running gnome 2.18 and xorg-x11 7.2 and
enable XDMCP login through the gnome login preference pane.
2. Run "/usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz -query X.X.X.X -once" where X.X.X.X is
the IP address of the linux server on the local lan.
3. Try to focus the window and type in a user name or password.
Expected results:
You should be able to type and have the text show up in the field you
clicked on.
Actual results:
All typing goes to the Terminal.app session that ran the Xquartz command.
Regression:
The XDMCP login screen worked correctly under X11 in Tiger.
