Ben has done a great job recently sorting all this out.
From the Utilities folder, I initiated X11 and now the Multiple
Monitor
problem is resolved.
Just in case you haven't realised, you no longer need to start X11
yourself.
OSX sets $DISPLAY for you (so make sure you don't set it to :0.0
manually)
and when X11 is required it is started automatically. This is a great
new feature.
