I understand the theory, and as a standalone idea, it's nice. (Well,
xinit also starts the X server, but X11.app does that, too.)
But my login account is hosted on an NFS server, and I use it to log
into Solaris machines, OS X machines, Linux machines, etc. The
.xinitrc is designed to work across these hosts. Having a so-called
X11 installation without xinit is a bit of a shock to this system.
