Well, you got me there. I know man searches directories in the path,
and most cases should be automatic. Also, it turns out that FreeBSD
has an /etc/manpath.config, which is equivalent to man.conf. Looks
like a nice big helping of crow in time for Thanksgiving!
At some point, I had set the man path on my FreeBSD system to point to
the TeXLive hierarchy. But this was awhile ago, so I completely forgot
it was necessary. But you're right, except for the TeX tree, I've
never had manual pages that wouldn't be automatically located by the
program.
