I am not sure what I did, but recently X11 stopped wanting to start with
its ugly but comfortable xterm window advertising its presence in the
left of my screen.
Attempting to launch things in a terminal window with the command
"xterm" indicates "DISPLAY not set".
I have attempted to remove /Applications/Utilities/X11.app, all of
/usr/X11, and any plist files I can find with org.x in the name. I then
have attempted to reinstall X11 from the Leopard install disk. Clicking
on the icon /Applications/Utilities/X11.app yields nothing, and "xterm"
in a terminal again proclaims "DISPLAY not set". I have attempted to
logout then back in to reset things, but to no avail.
Any way I can rescue this mess without doing a complete reinstall of
Leopard? That is feasible, but with backing up my files and then
reinstalling all my software later, the enterprise takes hours...
many thanks,
Les
