I am not sure what I did, but recently X11 stopped wanting to start

Attempting to launch things in a terminal window with the command
"xterm" indicates "DISPLAY not set".
I have attempted to remove /Applications/Utilities/X11.app, all of /
usr/X11, and any plist files I can find with org.x in the name. I
then have attempted to reinstall X11 from the Leopard install disk.
Clicking on the icon /Applications/Utilities/X11.app yields nothing,
and "xterm" in a terminal again proclaims "DISPLAY not set". I have
attempted to logout then back in to reset things, but to no avail.
Any way I can rescue this mess without doing a complete reinstall of
Leopard? That is feasible, but with backing up my files and then
reinstalling all my software later, the enterprise takes hours...
In Terminal, does "launchctl list | grep org.x" show an entry for
org.x.X11? If not, do you have a /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
org.x.X11.plist? I bet that file is missing.
