I hope you are aware of the fact that this is really a "US vs the rest
of the world" issue?
For years, I had to keep a ~/.Xmodmap file containing the line
keycode 66 = Mode_switch
On Leopard, for the first time, I didn't need it.
Now with your new release, it's back to square one :-(
I don't even use a French keyboard where this would be an absolutely
vital issue, because characters like \|[]{} cannot be typed without the
Alt key acting as Mode_switch. I use an ("international") US keyboard,
but I sometimes have to type accented characters or umlauts, and for
these I need Alt acting as Mode_switch.
