Sorry - I was not specific enough. I was referring to the native
OSX virtual key codes. Some apps (e.g. KeyCodes.app) can distinguish
left and right shift, left and right control. I can't recall if
they can distinguish left/right on alt and command.
At the low level in OSX (carbon?) there are extra bits for the right
version of shift, control, and I think one other modifier.
So for those where OSX can distinguish the keys, we should be able
to get X to report left vs right. One of the keys will be stuck as
left (or right) only.
