oops!
ok, so if I would like to make thinks in a clean way should I
reinstall the Essentials.pkg package? something else?
(although things work now --thanks again to you folks--, I would
prefer it, copying configuration files between computers is not my
preferred way to fix things...)

In a (desperate) attempt to get rid of X11 I removed too many
things (see below). My only concern is: why reinstalling X11User
from the Leopard installation DVD did not fix the problem? I would
expect it to install and configure such files...

The file /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist is installed
by the Essentials.pkg, not by X11User.
