What does the 'Follow System Keyboard Layout' option do (or what did it
do in Tiger)? Looking at the code now, it looks like it's a really
fancy checkbox that actually does nothing in the code. Did it work in
Tiger? Did id do what you expected in Tiger (like setup your
mode_switch key on intl keyboards)? Would fixing this to behave like
Tiger (assuming this check-box did your magic for you) solve 90% of your
problems?
One more thought on this Mode_switch question:
In the discussion we have all been pretending that people writing US
English in the US on a US keyboard don't need this; it's something for
foreigners. I am guilty of this simplification, too, talking about "US
vs the rest of the world".
In reality, even on a US keyboard there are a lot of glyphs that you get
through the Alt key. How do you type ¶©¢®™œæ etc? If you want these in
X11, you need Alt->Mode_switch, too.
