When I run the X11User.pkg from the Tiger installation disk it refuses to install, saying a newer version of X11 is already installed. This is, of course, correct as I have the version from Leopard.

I moved /usr/X11 out of the way, removed the LaunchAgents entry and:

	pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11User

that'll get you passed the package install problem.

however, once I had it installed, ran into other issues attempting to make it run. running X11.app exists w/ or w/o xinitrc. been sidetracked since, but will look at it more tonight.
