I noticed this behaviour.
Actually, if you hit caps lock in X11 (led light on), switch to
another application, hit caps lock again (led light off), and switch
back to X11, X11 behaves as if you did not hit the key (as if the
LED was still lit).
In this case You have to switch to another application, hit caps
lock, and then switch back to X11.
How hilarious. I've noticed this caps-lock issue before but couldn't
recreate it -- now I can thanks to your observation. There is one
interesting part of this that I hadn't noticed, and that is that in
X11, the first caps-lock toggle is ignored.
Here is an example using X11 terminal and mail.app:
Starting in mail.app, hit caps-on, _DO type some letters_, go to
terminal and type, result:
[TEXT], hit caps-off, [TEXT], hit caps-on, [text]
--or--
Starting in mail.app, hit caps-on, _DO NOT type anything_, go to
terminal and type, result:
[text], hit caps-off, [text], hit caps-on, [TEXT]
What I find interesting is that the first toggle of the caps-lock key
has no effect, only the subsequent hits toggle behavior. Even though
the problem is less apparent when the toggle eventually works as
expected, i.e., caps-off=lowercase, there is still a problem
somewhere. It just feels like things are normal because after
stabbing the button a couple times, we see the text behavior match
whether the LED is on or not. In both cases however, whether expected
or inverted behavior, the first hit of caps-lock has no effect. So
something isn't getting communicated properly.
