Okay, now things are starting to become a little clearer. As I noted in
my reply to Jeremy H. (copy below), neither Xmodmap nor Xresources exists
in my HOME directory. It's not clear to me why my installation of X11,
from Mac's 10.4.7 DVD, produced a configuration so different from what the
rest of you on this list are expecting. Did I miss out on an essential
step, or is everyone else using a more recent X11?

That's right, because there isn't a '.xinitrc' file in my HOME directory.

The only 'xinitrc' file on my system is in /etc/X11/xinit, which is pro-
bably the one you refer to as the 'system' file. In fact, 'xinitrc' is
the _only_ file in that directory. And it seems to me that that one can't
do the job in its present form because it has the following definitions:
userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
Neither of the files exists in the specified locations. Instead they are
here:
/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xmodmap
