I don't know how you interpreted Harald's answer to your original question:

He meant that you should write these lines into those files, which means
that you create the files if they don't exist.
And don't bother with any xinitrc scripts. The one you have from your
X11 installation will read the two files in your home directory once
they exist.
It's not clear to me why my installation of X11,
from Mac's 10.4.7 DVD, produced a configuration so different from what the
rest of you on this list are expecting. Did I miss out on an essential
step, or is everyone else using a more recent X11?
Most people here run Leopard.
