I have Tiger.11, not Leopard. Does this admonition still apply?

That's right, because there isn't a '.xinitrc' file in my HOME directory.

The only 'xinitrc' file on my system is in /etc/X11/xinit, which is pro-
bably the one you refer to as the 'system' file. In fact, 'xinitrc' is
the _only_ file in that directory. And it seems to me that that one can't
do the job in its present form because it has the following definitions:
userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
Neither of the files exists in the specified locations. Instead they are
here:
/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources
/usr/X11R6/bin/Xmodmap
This is where the files got placed when 'X11 1.1.3 XFree86 4.4.0' was
installed from the original 10.4.7 DVD. Should I simply copy these files
to /etc/X11/xinit?
Apparently, from what I've been reading in this list, there's a more
recent version of X11. Should I replace mine with a newer one? But which
one is compatible with 10.4.11? The numbering systems I saw on the Inter-
net was rather confusing, and a lot of the pages seemed to refer to the
'latest' versions from 4-5 years ago.
