Unfortunately, things aren't so rosy. Xterm is particularly tricky: I

pastes into Safari and Textedit with a right-click->paste or a
Command-V. Conversely, what I Command-C or Right-Click->Copy in
Safari pastes into xterm with the middle button. Is that what you
mean you cannot do?
Or do you mean you have to tell xterm to copy selection to clipboard
with an Xresources line 'XTerm*VT100*selectToClipboard: true'? What
are the reasons for not setting 'XTerm*VT100*selectToClipboard: true'?
Below, just rambles. I am not sure what I am trying to ask or add.
I have noticed that with all versions of X since Leopard, XEmacs
sees external selections as Clipboard items. They used to paste via
the same mouse button as they still do in xterm. That has taken
some relearning. Selections inside XEmacs still paste via the
middle-button click.

so this sounds like xemacs breaking the X11 laws... we're not going to
put in effort to make broken X11 apps behave right. We're going to
put in effort to make working ones behave right ;)
