FYI, there was the same problem for primary selections (note that
since xterm also supports cut buffers, this problem is somewhat
hidden, with bad side effects when non-ISO-8859-1 characters are
used). But if the primary selection is emptied and copied to the
clipboard, then I think you get an empty clipboard too, hence the
problem you're seeing, IMHO.
This problem was fixed a few months ago, in Xterm #230
("keepSelection" feature).
