Thanks a lot Jeremy. I installed X11 from xquartz.macosforge.org and
everything is working just find X11-wise now. Your advice
straightened everything out for me.
(FWIW the terminal was not maxing out the CPU, but near as I can tell
X11.app was launching two X11 processes instead of one -- all fixed
now.)
Once again, I appreciate your help.

You might be running into the kernel bug and just happened to see it
after installing xcode. Do you see the terminal taking up 100% cpu
in Activity monitor?
Check your system log in Console.app... that might reveal something
useful...
And you might as well just install the latest X11 release from
xquartz.macosforge.org while you're at it.

I need some troubleshooting advice. I recently downloaded and
installed Apple's xcode developer toolset, and having done that my
X11 terminal window no longer opens.
I can see it "struggling" to open on the dock, and can see an X11
process in the Activity Monitor, but it never opens to a command
prompt as it used to.
I checked and verified that did once work using an old bootable
backup.
I'm not sure where to look to solve my problem and correct my
situation. I would appreciate any & all suggestions or advice.
