Using the latest 2.3.2rc3, it seems X11 thinks the screen resolution is 75dpi:
xdpyinfo | grep -i resolution
  resolution:    75x75 dots per inch

Apparently, the true screen resolution is unknown to macos itself. As evidence I offer System Profiler, which as far as I can tell does not list this information, and Art Director's toolkit, whose ruler also seems to be based on the default 75 dpi assumption. Also TextEdit, whose 12 point fonts surely aren't 12 points on my screen.
