I'm on a PPC G5 with Leopard and XQuartz 2.3.2_rc3 installed. When
I run the Activity Monitor showing active processes, there are two
launchd entries, one owned by root, the other by me.
This is normal. The one owned by root is PID 1 and controls all sorts
of system daemons. The one owned by you controls all the apps you
run, your desktop, finder, dock, menu bar, ...
These do not seem to interfere with each other, but I was wondering
where the copy owned by me is coming from, and whether or not I
should kill it or the other.
If you kill the root (PID 1) one, your system goes down. If you kill
your own, at the very least you get logged out in a rather abrupt
fashion, and at the worst all sorts of orphaned processes will lie
about getting in each others' and your way.
In other words, don't touch 'em.
This behavior was not noticed until I upgraded from XQuartz 2.3.1
to XQuartz 2.3.2_rc1, and it persists with the current release.
It may not have been noticed by you, but it is normal system
behaviour and has been for a long time.
