I don't think telling people to edit the script (rather than some
preference or configuration file) is an acceptable solution,
precisely for the reason you mention. If Jeremy adds this patch to
the official version, I 'll edit the FAQ to tell people to do the
"defaults write ...".
Okay. But then I don't think a solution exists. So you can write a
FAQ entry saying the problem has no solution, or you can write one
including (something like) my patch (with a warning about updates,
and clearly labeling this as a /workaround/, not a /solution/), or
you can choose not to write a FAQ entry at all.
I get the distinct impression that Jeremy doesn't want to use a
solution like my patch, though he hasn't said so. I can understand
that; it is not very Apple-ish to ask the user to tell the computer
about the hardware. (OTOH, some people may even wish to lie to X11
about their screen resolution, and my patch lets them do that.)
It's not that I don't want to use that patch... it's that I don't want
to use that patch as the "final" solution. I think it's ok to add
this as a "hidden" defaults option for power users, but it needs to
"just work" for everyone else.
I think my short-term (2.3.2_rc4) solution will involve your patch as
an override and using the primary display's DPI for the general case.
