Nope... what you did should work assuming your environment isn't
malformed. The issue here seems to be that you have DISPLAY set
somewhere in your environment. If you notice in your log, xterm is
trying to use 0:0 for the DISPLAY for some reason. For one thing, you
shouldn't be setting $DISPLAY. Additionally, that's not even a valid
DISPLAY value. Please check the FAQ for instructions on how to find
where DISPLAY is being set in your environment and remove it. The
title of the relevant section has something to do with ssh, but the
same issue applies here.

I am very new to all of this, but any help would be appreciated!
I recently upgraded my X11 installation from 2.1.1 to 2.1.3. After
the upgrade, I am unable to reliably open xterms. The following
error appears in the console log:
2/8/08 1:42:13 PM org.x.X11[474] _X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't
get address for 0:6000: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
2/8/08 1:42:13 PM org.x.X11[474] xterm Xt error: Can't open display:
0:0
My original path to all of this was to install X11 from the Leopard
Install DVD, and then do the upgrade to 2.1.1 by downloading from http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz
. I had several major issues with the Leopard version which were
resolved by upgrading to 2.1.1.
If I downgrade to 2.1.1, everything works fine.
My guess is that 2.1.3 requires some different setup that I am not
aware of.
Thanks for you help.
Walt
