Yes: observation. The last few times, I've made a note of when the
dropout happened, and then just sat there and watched it happen an
hour later. Hands away from the keyboard, watching the window title bar
gray out and come back. (What I was actually trying to do was watch to
see if the menu bar changed, because I thought some other app was
stealing focus from X11 ... but I saw no change there.)

A possible variable is that I've only recently started using iCal
alarms on a regular basis. However, from what I can see of iCal's
behavior there doesn't seem to be any reason to think it would have
an hourly wakeup ... do you know otherwise?
