Michael, I was in the same fix a couple months ago (I'm at 10.4.11, too)
Backup your HD
get out your old OSX install CD
load X11 from there
then...the next time you do the online "software update" from the apple menu
it will look at your system and do the additional installs necessary.
aside: you may need to delete from the terminal window any old distributions
if there has been a true snafu due to earlier attempts.

If you managed to "upgrade online" from 10.3 to 10.4, then you should be
able to find the Tiger X11 from the same source. Otherwise, the only X11
officially available online is for 10.3 "Jaguar". Nobody understands
why, but that's how it has always been.
