I reverted to the Tiger version of X11 last October, as Leopard's

As Tiger's X11 has been working great for me, I decided to leave it
alone until the terrific X11 fixes discussed here made it into an
official Mac OS X 10.5 release. It appears that day is here, as
Apple just released the Mac OS X 10.5.2 update with what appear to
be significant X11 changes!
So, should I just install the (Combo) 10.5.2 update? Or, should I
first run the X11 installer from the Leopard CD, and *then* install
the 10.5.2 Combo update?
Hm... I tried installing X11.app from Tiger, and then installing
10.5.2, and it didn't work so well -- it seemed to not install
properly (meaning, Tiger's X11.app was no overwritten with 10.5.2's.)
If I were you, I'd follow the uninstallation steps and/or reinstall
X11.app from the Leopard disc before performing the upgrade. If
anyone out there runs into problems, we'll have to try to figure out
the best steps to recover. (It shouldn't be too bad, but I don't know
off-hand how it would be done most cleanly.)
I got it to work by performing the following steps:
1. Reinstalled X11 from "Optional Installs.mpkg" on original Leopard DVD
2. Commented out lines to set the DISPLAY environment variable in my
.tcshrc file (for others this may be in .bashrc, .login, etc.)
3. Deleted my ~/.xinitrc file (as it is no longer needed with Leopard's
X11)
4. Restored "/System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist" (if you
didn't
archive your original 10.5.0 version, a copy can be downloaded from
<http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.5/X11server-46/org.x.X11.plist
> )
5. Ran "sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
org.x.X11.plist"
6. Restored "/usr/bin/quartz-wm" (I had archived my original 10.5.0
version;
I'm not sure where a new version can be downloaded from but I
think that
previous mailing from this list can point you in the right
direction)
7. This should restore a functioning Leopard 10.5.0 X11 installation
8. Installed Mac OS X 10.5.2 (I used the Combo updater downloadable from
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/>)
9. Done
This appears to have worked fine for me, and I now have a functioning
Leopard
10.5.2 X11 installation.
