First - the delay on initial startup is probably unacceptable - people
are not looking at the system log and nothing happens for a LONG time
(on my Intel - probably a REALLY long time on my laptop).
Second it's inconsistent - the only way to make it consistent is to
remove the & after the call to font-cache.sh - this delay is OK on the
Intel - may not be so OK on the laptop.
I think on balance how you had it was 'better' - but there is a known
'feature' there.
I'll try putting a sleep BEFORE the call to font-cache.sh... does this
make sense? Is the cache invalidated when it's being rebuilt? Maybe a
2 sec delay will put it into the dead time where the user is busy
wondering what to do next.
I've run out of time today.

Peter, can you try throwing this inside of your /usr/X11/bin/startx
(maybe after the line "defaultdisplay=":$d" by the other Apple stuff)
