And the question response is broken in that even though I answered
"no" (or actually 'n' as the prompt indicated), it replace my system
xinitrc anyway.
Not good. Fortunately, it does keep a backup version, so I just
moved the original system one back into place.

This is a Fink problem, more precisely a problem with a very recent
addition to Fink that one developer made without, as far as I can
tell, discussing this with anyone else.
OTOH, when Fink installed the new xinitrc package, it asked you
very explicitly whether you wanted to let it replace the system
xinitrc by an augmented one that adds some additional hooks. Did
you just reply "yes" automatically?
