Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your help on this.

I don't currently own a Mac, but I've recently been helping several people install Inkscape on their Macs, so I added a section to the Inkscape wiki here. I have just added a note about the release candidate and XQuartz roadmap there. I imagine there are a lot of people confused by the different versions of X11 on the Mac, as well as different binaries for Panther, Tiger and Leopard, so I've tried to simplify things there. I am thinking the Mac section could be useful for other wikis like Gimp and OpenOffice and might look into that. I would also be happy for this to be copied for an FAQ on the XQuartz site, if that is useful.

Another thing I've noticed is that Leopard built Inkscape binaries won't run on Tiger, and I sometimes vice-versa as well. Someone has suggested this is because of the change in X11 to the x.org codebase (see here). I did see a build of XQuartz built to run on Tiger, but it was pre-XQuartz 2.1.1, so I didn't trust it. I am wondering if there are plans to release a full version of XQuartz for Tiger.

Yes, give us time. That is in the plans, but for now, we're focusing on squashing bugs.

Would that solve binary incompatibility problems for future builds, or would it break existing Tiger built binaries? Is the problem more likely in broader Leopard API changes?

There's probably not any API changes whatsoever here. In fact, they should work. Chances are they're just linked against the new location. You can probably setup a /usr/X11 -> /usr/X11R6 symlink on Tiger and it'll work.
