Just installed Leopard (upgraded to 10.5.1) yesterday and tried the
2.1.2 release today.
I mostly use nxclient (NoMachine) to talk to office linux machines.
What I saw with 10.4 was that if the X server was not running,
nxclient would start it up (I would see an xterm as well) and then
nxclient would open a connection to the linux machine.
What I am seeing with the latest release is that nxclient's
initialization will spawn the X server, nxclient does NOT detect that
X is already running, and nxclient causes another instance of X to
start up. I see 2 X11 icons in the dock. nxclient does seem to work as
expected after that.
If I exit from nxclient an re-start it, I do not get any additional
X11 instances.
In Activity Monitor, I see 2 xinit processes, 2 quartz-wm processes
and 1 X11 process.
I suspect that the NoMachine folks need to update how their client
detects that the X Server is running.
Anyone else see this -- confirm the multiple processes and multiple
icons in the dock?
Or is it just me?
Getting NoMachine to work correctly was one of the reasons I delayed
upgrading from Tiger to Leopard.
Now that I have done so, it is working with what appear to me mostly
harmless side-effects.
Jim
