But I've run into a problem with Xephyr that doesn't occur with
Xnest --
the keyboard characters are wrong if I am running a remote nested
session,
but not a local one. It looks like someone else had this problem:
http://lists.apple.com/archives/X11-users/2007/Nov/msg00988.html
but I could not find a resolution.
There's an absolutely disgusting workaround:
http://lists.apple.com/archives/X11-users/2007/Nov/msg00513.html
specifically:
"I launched gconf-editor, navigated to "/desktop/gnome/peripherals/
keyboard/kbd" and added an invalid layout to the "layouts" key, I made
sure that it was the only layout in the list. Now gnome starts
smoothly on tightvncserver display, and my italian keyboard works as
expected. When I launch gnome on local xfree servers it shows a couple
of error box about XKB configuration errors, but apart from that, it
appears to work correctly..."
(It appears tightvnc can exhibit the same problem.)
This does seem to work. I just put "Bogus" in there as a keyboard
layout. Of course, as I was doing it via xdmcp I needed to type that
in using the character viewer thingy.
Reading your post more carefully I'm not entirely certain this is the
same problem, as I was also getting this problem on Xnest.
