Thanks for that. It does bring up the full X menu but the server still covers both displays. Is there any way to make it just cover one, like X11.app does ?

I don't understand what you mean. This is exactly what X11.app does (via xinit).



Sorry, yes it does, but I didn't realise because the root window is transparent and doesn't seem to respond to xsetroot settings. But when I start via xdm, the remote machines desktop (xfce) insists on setting the background, which I think it does via a full-screen non- root window. Hence my wish to have X at less than full-screen.

Sorry, we're not really at a point where we can support using other window managers. I'd recommend using metacity on your remote machine. I've had the best luck using metacity in place of quartz-wm.
