It must be set, because the system sets it to something like the following.
┌─(njustn@lazarus:s000)───────────────────────────────────────────────────(~)─┐
└─(09:31:%)── echo $DISPLAY ──(Wed,Jul02)─┘
/tmp/launch-PlUOcL/:0
Not :0. In both terminal.app and xterm and any other terminal you may
wish to try, it has to be either something you set or something set by
an application you installed.

I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.
Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited.
Imagination encircles the world.
