It happened to me too. I was using the OS X Leopard server. I recently updated the OS from 10.4 to 10.5.4. But I was still running x11 version 2.0. I called up Apple support and they had a similar issue reported with 10.5 client. It had something to do with wrong version of support files being installed for x11. I was asked to download the OS update combo from the apple site and update to the same version again. It fixed the problem and x11 launches again. :)

(sadly, they seem to have scrolled out of the buffer, and I can't seem
to find the lines in /var/log/system.1.bz2)  But it looked like when it settled down, my display was on :2, rather than :0.

I reboot again, figured it was a sign that something just wasn't right,
and it seemed to be OK after that.

It just happened again, I got the console output this time.
