Perhaps you COULD try to set up dxpc + ssh (with blowfish cipher
and compression, etc.). This should be faster than bare ssh since
dxpc does X protocol specific compression, though I don't really
know what the speed difference really is. I would say this is pretty
tedious to set up, but this could be something else to try first, since
you do have an IT guy. :-)

BTW when you say you use vnc when travelling, you don't really
mean you just use vnc (instead of vnc + ssh), or you are using a
version of vnc with encryption?
